    • Confirmation Sponsor

A sponsor is someone who will be with you on your lifelong journey of faith. Think of someone who has already been involved in your spiritual formation, like members of your family, your godparents, parishioners, your friends' parents, teachers, or coaches. And ask yourself:

      • Who models living as a disciple of Christ?
      • Who would I feel comfortable talking about my faith?
      • Who would I feel comfortable praying with and who is already praying for me?

      Requirements:

      A sponsor must be:
      • At least 16 years old and mature enough to assist you spiritually, intellectually, and morally.
      • A fully initiated Catholic (meaning that they have received the sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation).
      • A "practicing" Catholic (meaning that they are actively receiving the Sacraments and attending Mass and a registered parishioner at a Catholic Church).
        • To verify this information each sponsor must send to our Church a Letter of Good Standing. This is required to be a sponsor for Confirmation
      • Parents may NOT be a sponsor. It is highly encouraged to choose a godparent as a sponsor to show the direct link between the sacrament of Baptism and Confirmation when possible, but not required.
      • Must be in good standing with the Catholic Church

According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church to be in good standing means (the bold are the main points):

II. The Precepts of the Church

2041 The precepts of the Church are set in the context of a moral life bound to and nourished by liturgical life. the obligatory character of these positive laws decreed by the pastoral authorities is meant to guarantee to the faithful the indispensable minimum in the spirit of prayer and moral effort, in the growth in love of God and neighbor:

      • 2042 The first precept (“You shall attend Mass on Sundays and holy days of obligation.") requires the faithful to participate in the Eucharistic celebration when the Christian community gathers together on the day commemorating the Resurrection of the Lord.

      • The second precept (“You shall confess your sins at least once a year.") ensures preparation for the Eucharist by the reception of the sacrament of reconciliation, which continues Baptism's work of conversion and forgiveness.

      • The third precept (“You shall humbly receive your Creator in Holy Communion at least during the Easter season.") guarantees as a minimum the reception of the Lord's Body and Blood in connection with the Paschal feasts, the origin and center of the Christian liturgy.

      • 2043 The fourth precept (“You shall keep holy the holy days of obligation.") completes the Sunday observance by participation in the principal liturgical feasts which honor the mysteries of the Lord, the Virgin Mary, and the saints.

      • The fifth precept (“You shall observe the prescribed days of fasting and abstinence.") ensures the times of ascesis and penance which prepare us for the liturgical feasts; they help us acquire mastery over our instincts and freedom of heart.

      • The faithful also have the duty of providing for the material needs of the Church, each according to his abilities.

    • Saint Name

QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER FOR YOUR CONFIRMATION SAINT Project

How and Why We Pick a Saint for Confirmation

When you are Confirmed by the Bishop he will Confirm you by the name you choose.

Because the sacrament of Confirmation is the renewal of your Baptism, the Church asks that you first consider taking on your Baptismal name (either your first or middle name) as your Confirmation name; however, you may choose a different name.

First Step: Research your first and middle name and ask your parents why they named you what they did. If either of these names is significant to you then there is no need to pick a "new" name.

Second Step: If you are not named after a saint or you have another saint in mind that you would really like to take as your Confirmation name then do it. Do not pick a name just because it sounds cool, because it is the name of your boyfriend or girlfriend or because it would give you cool initials.

Third Step: Research, pray and talk to your parents, sponsor, youth ministers, small group leader about saints.

Here are some starting spots to help you pick a Saint name:

Need help finding your saint but don't know where to begin? Try starting with this blog by Life Teen Find Your Saint.

Catholic.org you are able to search by "Patron Saint" what each Saint is known for (e.g. the Joseph of Cupertino is the patron Saint for students taking exams).

Another spot to look is at another blog by Life Teen: Biggest and Best List of Confirmation Saints (for Guys and Girls)

Fourth Step: Tell your Confirmation small group leader what saint you have chosen. Then complete the Saint Project (which is found below). Do not simply copy and paste answers off of websites. Rachael will just ask you to do it again (this time by hand).

Your Saint does not need to be the same gender as you.
